Medical, dental program free

To help lessen Mississippi’s health disparities by encouraging more state students to consider medical and dental fields, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is sponsoring the Summer Medical and Dental Education.

College freshmen and sophomores have until March 1, 2010, to apply for the free, six-week program.

Those accepted into SMDEP will have a basic science curriculum, career-development activities, one-on-one time with doctors and financial planning workshops.

Tuition, meals and housing are provided. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is devoted to health and health care, both nationally and in medically under-served states.

Applications are at www.smdep.org.

What is observed in November?

Chase’s Calendar of Events reveals November is many things to many people.

It is both American Diabetes Month and Diabetic Eye Disease Month. It’s Aviation History Month and Epilepsy Awareness Month. It’s also Month of the Military Family and National Adoption Month.

Among other health issues to take the limelight this month are AIDS, Alzheimer’s, long-term care, prematurity and pet cancer.

It’s also National Roasting Month, National Scholarship Month, National American Indian Heritage Month, Peanut Butter Lovers’ Month, and Vegan Month. And don’t forget this one: National Inspirational Role Models Month.

For Family Stories Month — yep, that’s now — start writing down the remembrances of our elders before those stories are lost to future generations.

FOOD

Stuffed bread is born

Today, in particular, is recognized as the sandwich’s birthday.

This is a time to recognize the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, a.k.a. John Montague of London. Legend says Montague, a known gambler, invented putting meat and other edibles between two pieces of bread as a time-saving device while he was in the midst of an all-day gambling session.

That was in 1762, if the story is correct. Since that time not many foods have escaped the sandwich form.
