A Touching Letter From a Union Soldier To His Wife

Throughout the Civil War, soldiers and loved ones back home communicated with each other by mail, often sharing tender moments through the written word. Many times these letters would address the unspoken but possible scenario of dying on the battlefield. In July 1861, Sullivan Ballou, a major in the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry, wrote such a letter to his wife, Sarah.
