BILOXI — Schools across the state are looking for a few good teachers.
And thanks to a national program, people who have a bachelor’s degree in something besides education can earn their teaching certificate and be in the classroom in about a year.
The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence is holding free information sessions in Biloxi on Saturday for its “Teach & Inspire Scholarship Program.”
The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and recruits and prepares people to teach in high-need schools in math, science and English.
Dave Saba, director of ABCTE, said most teachers have an education degree, “but this is just another route.”
“We are bringing another group of people into teaching,” he said.
“Most people who go through our program haven’t lost their jobs, but they may be unsatisfied with their current job.”
There are a handful of alternative certification programs.
Participants receive a full scholarship and materials needed to become a certified teacher.
Once participants complete the program, they receive a $1,000 stipend.
Those who complete the Teach & Inspire program must make a three-year commitment to teach in a high-need Mississippi school.
Saba said education officials like having teachers in the classroom with different types of degrees.
