BILOXI — Rosetta Richard, a Biloxi resident, has been elected to the National Association of State Boards of Education.

Richard, who also serves on the Mississippi State Board of Education, begins her one-year term in January. She will serve as director of the southern region on the association.

“Rosetta Richard has provided a guiding hand for public education in Mississippi for many years, and she has taken that experience at home and translated it into service as an influential and honored board member of NASBE,” said Brenda Welburn, executive director of the national board. “We look forward to her return to the board of directors.

“She and the rest of our board provide their fellow policymakers from across the country the support and diversity of opinion so critical to finding solutions to the educational needs of American students in the 21st century.”

Richard said she was excited about the opportunity to serve on the association’s Board of Directors and said they will meet in January, March and June at the board’s headquarters in Arlington, Va.

The group also has a national conference next year in Utah.

Richard was appointed to the state Board of Education in 1993 and was reappointed in 2002.

During her tenure she has been active in the national association, serving as board delegate for several years. She also has served on the public policy and governmental affairs committees, and in 2005 she received the Distinguished Service Award.

Richard’s term on the state Board of Education expires in July 2011.

She retired from Mississippi Power, where she served as an employee relations representative from March 1990 until April 2006.
