Josef Jackson of St. Patrick Catholic School in Biloxi is winner of the 2009 State Spelling Bee Championship.

Jackson will represent Mississippi at the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May.

The winning word was "nominative."

Josef’s parents are Air Force Col. and Mrs. Jeff Jackson, who moved here about eight months ago from Randolph AFB, Texas.

“Josef was a very early reader,” said his mom, Lisa Jackson. “Before even kindergarten, he was ready to start reading.”

Thirteen-year-old Bailey Bullock of Crystal Springs took second place. She is home-schooled through the Christian Home Educators Connection.
