Forced from its waterfront home by Hurricane Katrina, the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo next year will return to Gulfport, where it began 61 years ago.

Congratulations to the city, Island View Casino and the State Port Authority for making this homecoming possible.

And sincere appreciation should be extended to Harrison County and Biloxi officials who provided the rodeo with temporary “lodging” for the last four years.

The rodeo, which features salt- and freshwater competitions and draws thousands of participants, is scheduled for July 2010 on the Island View’s beachfront property and should move back to Jones Park once a new facility is built similar to Rice Pavilion, which was destroyed by Katrina.
