The Gulfport City Council endorsed the concept of community this week by christening two new municipal facilities in honor of their surrounding neighborhoods.
When completed, the new facility on U.S. 49 will be the Lyman Community Center and the one on Dedeaux Road will be the Orange Grove Community Center.
While there is no mistaking Gulfport for the largest city in South Mississippi, there should be no denying that it is a diverse collection of communities and neighborhoods that are entitled to maintain a sense of their own identity.
While not unanimous, the 5-2 council vote speaks well of the residents of both areas who spoke up for their communities.
