As expected, shoppers are filling the new businesses in D’Iberville — and the roads leading to them.
To ease the traffic congestion on the east side of D’Iberville, Jackson County supervisors have turned to Congress for help to build a wider road between Sangani Boulevard in Harrison County and Washington Avenue north of Interstate 10 in Jackson County. The proposed road would divert traffic off I-10 and relieve the congestion at the intersection I-10 and I-110 in D’Iberville.
Similar attention should be given to access to the area from the west. For instance, could a service or frontage road be build north of and parallel to I-10 from Cedar Lake Road in Biloxi to the new retail developments in D’Iberville?
And south of I-10, a wider Popp’s Ferry Road in Biloxi between Cedar Lake Road and D’Iberville would permit more motorists to avoid I-10. It would also be a godsend to the post-Katrina developments along Popp’s Ferry, especially First Baptist Church of Biloxi.
Jackson County officials are to be commended for working to make it easier for motorists to get to and from a major retail development located outside their jurisdiction. We hope they are doing so in the belief that improvements in this area will benefit all jurisdictions.
That belief should also motivate Harrison County and Biloxi officials.
