The formal announcement will be made at a press conference this afternoon, but South Mississippi has been buzzing for weeks about the Champions Golf Tour coming to the Coast.

Our stop on the tour will be called the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic and will be played April 28-May 2, 2010, at the Beau Rivage’s Fallen Oak Golf Course, located at the edge of the DeSoto National Forest on Mississippi 15.

The Champions Tour, for golfers 50 and over, will be played here for three years and boasts a $1.6 million purse. It will be televised nationally by the Golf Channel.

The economic impact of the PGA event is estimated to be as much as $25 million each year. Habitat for Humanity will be the Classic’s charity beneficiary.

In addition, the accompanying attention should help promote the Coast as both a tourist destination and an accommodating site for economic development.

The Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic is a welcome addition to the Coast’s calendar of events, and we wish it every success.
