Miles expects Jefferson back for stretch run

Les Miles expects quarterback Jordan Jefferson to be back at practice later this week as ninth-ranked LSU regroups from last weekend’s loss at Alabama.

Jefferson left with an ankle injury in the second half of LSU’s 24-15 loss to the Crimson Tide. Miles says Keiland Williams, Stevan Ridley and Russell Shepard could get most of the carries now that Charles Scott is lost for the season with his collar bone injury.

Also, the Ole Miss-LSU game has been moved to a 2:30 p.m. kickoff and will be shown on CBS.

Although LSU is out of contention to win the Southeastern Conference, the Tigers still could play in a New Year’s Day bowl with a strong finish in their final three games against Louisiana Tech, Ole Miss and Arkansas.

Miles says LSU is disappointed, but remains committed to finishing strong.

@BR Body bold Lede colon:SEC gives weekly honors to Mallett, Arenas, Henry: The Southeastern Conference named Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett, Alabama cornerback Javier Arenas and Florida punter Chas Henry players of the week.

Mallett completed 23 of 27 passes for 329 yards and had a 1-yard touchdown run in a win over South Carolina. He set a school record for completion percentage.

Arenas had seven tackles, including two for a loss, in Alabama’s victory over LSU.

Henry averaged nearly 53 yards on four punts in Florida’s win over Vanderbilt.

Linemen of the week were Tennessee offensive tackle Aaron Douglas and Georgia defensive end Montez Robinson.

Kentucky quarterback Morgan Newton won freshman honors.

Two injured ECU players lost for season: East Carolina will be shorthanded as the Pirates continue defense of their Conference USA championship.

Safety Dekota Marshall and tight end Rob Kass suffered season-ending injuries in last week’s loss to Virginia Tech, coach Skip Holtz said Monday.

Marshall broke two bones in his lower left leg midway through the first quarter of the 16-3 loss to the 20th-ranked Hokies when he took a hard hit while on punt coverage. Holtz says Marshall had surgery over the weekend.

Kass injured his right knee in the second quarter when he fumbled after a catch and had several players fall on him.

Holtz also says defensive lineman Josh Smith is questionable with a shoulder injury and missed most of last week’s practices.
