BILOXI -- Employees of the Beau Rivage Casino Resort visited two charitable organizations in Biloxi on Monday to see how the money they donated is helping families.

This year, the employees have raised $309,400 and donated to more than 100 charities. That brings the total contributed by the MGM Mirage Voice Foundation since 2002 to more than $1 million in Mississippi.

"It is inspiring to see their commitment to the community where they live, work and care for their families," said Beau Rivage President George P. Corchis Jr.

His wife, Amy Corchis, accompanied the employees to the American Red Cross office and Back Bay Mission on Monday.

Robert Beebe, director of Emergency Services at the American Red Cross in Biloxi, told the 20 employees that the "number one disaster in the community is single-family fires."

There was an average of three home, apartment or FEMA trailer fires a day in Harrison, Hancock and Pearl River counties last year. He said the $10,000 donation by the Beau Rivage employees will help provide temporary hotel rooms and buy food and clothing for families whose homes are damaged or destroyed. The Red Cross spent about $160,000 for these services last year.

"I like to share the blessings that I'm given," Rhea Felsher said, explaining why she contributes to the Voice Foundation.

When she visited the agencies that received donations, "It makes me want to do even more."

She is also a member of the Beau's Diversity Council, which looks for ways to make an impact in the community, both with financial donations and services like distributing information on hurricane preparedness to Hispanic and Vietnamese families in East Biloxi.

Because MGM Mirage absorbs the administrative costs for the Voice Foundation, all the money given by the employees goes directly to the charitable organization.

The employees donated more than $300,000 to 100 charities. They gave $10,000 to each of the following organizations: Mental Health Association, Make-A-Wish, Hope Haven, Hands On Gulf Coast, American Red Cross, Back Bay Mission, Boys and Girls Club of Gulf Coast. They also gave $7,500 to Visions of Hope and $5,000 to Memorial Hospital Foundation. The remaining $210,000 was given to the charity of the employees' choice, including St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, Humane Society of South Mississippi, American Cancer Society and Gulf Coast Women's Center for Nonviolence.
