Casino revenue on the Coast was up $6 million from April to May but down $8.6 million compared to last May.

Casinos here won $98.8 million last month, less than May 2008’s winnings of $107.5 million.

The Mississippi State Tax Commission showed the revenue was down 5 percent statewide in May and down 8 percent on the Coast. In May 2008, the 11 Coast casinos won $98.8 million compared to almost $108 million in 2007.

The record May on the Coast was $113 million in 2005, three months before Hurricane Katrina. The Coast still has one less casino than before the storm.

The Coast casinos started last year with strong revenues and August 2008 set a record. Since Hurricanes Gustav and Ike last September and a nationwide economic crisis, the casinos haven’t been able to beat the prior year’s levels since last August. Mississippi’s river county casinos were down 2 percent in May.
