G-20 pledge fuels stock surge

Stocks jumped to new highs for the year Monday as the dollar extended its slide, boosting prices for commodities including gold and oil. Energy and materials stocks led the market higher.

Investors bought stocks for a fourth straight day on growing confidence about the global economic recovery, getting a shot of optimism from news this weekend that the Group of 20 countries will keep stimulus measures in place. Investors saw the agreement as a signal that interest rates would remain low. Major stock indexes rose as much as 2 percent, including the Dow Jones industrial average, which jumped 185 points.

Ida delays cruise ship arrival in N.O.

Tropical Storm Ida has delayed the arrival of a new cruise ship in New Orleans. The Carnival Triumph was expected to begin operations from the Port of New Orleans on Tuesday. But the port announced a one-day delay because the mouth of the Mississippi River had been closed to deep-draft navigation.

The ship marks an expansion of Carnival Cruise Lines’ presence in New Orleans. Port spokesman Chris Bonura said the Triumph is a larger ship and its addition of 7-day cruises will mark a return of that service to New Orleans that’s lacked since Hurricane Katrina.
