Three University of Southern Mississippi students from the Coast, with sights on careers in tourism and casino management, will have an opportunity to experience the industry firsthand as interns at the Global Gaming Expo on Nov. 16 to 19 in Las Vegas.

The students — Emily Adams, Audrey Feeney and Angela Ladner — were chosen based upon competitive essays that were reviewed by members of the G2E Conference advisory board and directors from the University of Nevada Las Vegas’ International Gaming Institute. Fifty winners were selected to participate in the G2E “By the Industry, For the Industry” internship program.

Adams is a junior from Gulfport, majoring in tourism management; Feeney is a senior from Long Beach, majoring in tourism management; and Ladner is a senior from Saucier, majoring in resort management.

The Department of Casino, Hospitality & Tourism Management will fund the students’ travel and accommodation needs with money raised by the students in their annual “Passions for the Palette” fundraising event.

Larry Gregory, executive director of the Mississippi Gaming Commission, has offered to introduce and mentor the students during the expo. The students also will have access to the exhibit floor and the Advanced Gaming Institute and admission to a special student group session on gaming and hospitality career opportunities.

“The G2E gaming summit is the largest in the world and attended by all casinos, suppliers, manufacturers and related industries,” said Dr. Catherine Price, chair of the Department of Casino, Hospitality & Tourism Management at USM.

Two USM students outside the Coast area are also participating. Alison Cox is a junior from Hattiesburg, majoring in tourism management. Rachel McDowell is a senior from Chicago, majoring in hospitality management.
