Favre, Letterman trade jabs

Retired QB hedges the comeback question again

Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre visited David Letterman on “The Late Show” on Thursday night to talk football and his retirement.

Favre, a Hancock County native and USM player, spent 12 minutes with Letterman trading jibes and chatting with the late night host.

“You haven’t been here in a long, long time. What do you do this time of year. What is that like,” Letterman asked.

Favre told him he takes his daughter to school and then putters around on his 400-acre property near Hattiesburg.

Letterman then asked if Favre liked to hunt and had he ever hunted on game day.

Sheepishly, Favre admitted he had.

“I have to admit, yes. I was outside of Green Bay, I was bow hunting,” he said.

Letterman asked for specifics. “Where were you, in the parking lot?” Letterman wisecracked.

“ A little bit farther out. I think we were playing the Bears that week,” Favre replied. “I think we lost that game.”

After talking about Favre’s beginnings at USM, Letterman turned to his retirement and then asked what everyone has been asking: Are you retired?

“I have retired,” Favre said.”You watch TV a lot, don’t you?” he teased Letterman, who then asked about whether Favre submitted retirement papers.

“No, I haven’t signed it. I think the only reason I sign that form is so I can get a severance check,” Favre retorted.

But then, as Favre did when he talked to the Sun Herald for the upcoming book, “The Brett Favre Story,” Favre hedged on whether he would come back.

“When training camp gets close, something’s bound to happen,” Favre said.” Butterflies … something’s bound to happen.”

Letterman let him off the hook after that, but got one more zinger in. He said he’d heard the city of Green Bay was packing it in after Favre’s retirement.

“I heard they’re packing up and moving to Michigan,” he said, then jabbed Favre back. “Haven’t you heard that? Don’t you watch TV?”

They finished the exchange by noting Favre is on the cover of the Madden ’09 video football game.
