JACKSON COUNTY — A woman was shot this morning north of the Hurley community in a confrontation with a deputy sheriff.

Deputies were responding to a report of a possible suicide attempt in the parking lot of Doggie Town, 21737 Mississippi 613.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said officers arrived to find a woman standing behind a vehicle and holding a gun to her head.

“The officer told her to drop the gun but she would not drop the gun,” Byrd said. “She turned the gun to him and squeezed the trigger. That’s when she was shot by the officer.”

Byrd said the initial incident is believed to be domestic-related and the woman was alive when she was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
