SAN DIEGO, May 9 -- Summary: With the recent devastating
cyclone in Myanmar causing an estimated 100,000 deaths and leaving over a
million people homeless, the need for relief aid is immense. Internet
entrepreneurs Sharon Tucci and Steve Jones have launched the Myanmar
Challenge, a grassroots effort to award awareness for humanitarian needs, with
hopes of filling the need as much as possible. Setting an initial goal of
having 1,000 individuals and companies take the Myanmar Challenge, Tucci and
Jones hope to create the exposure and relief contributions necessary to save
thousands more victims of the cyclone.
An estimated 100,000 people have perished due to the devastating cyclone
that hit Myanmar, the largest country by geographical area in Southeast Asia.
Two Internet entrepreneurs, Sharon Tucci and Steve Jones, have risen to the
call of community support by launching the Myanmar Challenge website. The
objective of the site is to increase awareness of the situation in which
millions are finding themselves without many things we take for granted
-- such as food, clean water and shelter.
The Myanmar Challenge asks companies doing business online to pledge their
support by offering either direct donations to one of the many relief
organizations working in the affected region or by offering pledges based on
purchases made at their websites by individuals. Tucci and Jones have set a
goal of having 1,000 individuals and companies take the Myanmar Challenge.
"If each of these 1,000 individuals and companies only contribute $10
each," said Tucci, "That could potentially help save several hundred lives.
That makes every minute spent on this endeavor worth it."
"We truly want to increase awareness of the devastation," added Jones.
"Unfortunately, other news in the mainstream in much of the U.S. and other
countries is overshadowing Myanmar's tragic situation. We want to challenge
people to make a difference and to spread the word."
The Myanmar Challenge website is being operated as a clearing house. No
direct contributions are made via the site. Instead companies and individuals
are encouraged to directly contribute to any of a number of relief
organizations, many of which are listed at the Myanmar Challenge website.
