HATTIESBURG -- Gulfport police officers testifying today said they saw no injuries on Jessie Lee Williams Jr. the night of his arrest.
The officers said he was belligerent but laid back at points, talking and laughing with another officer, but did not resist him. The testimony could be crucial to the prosecution because defense attorney Jim Davis claims his client, Ryan Michael Teel, did not cause the injuries that resulted in Williams' death at the Harrison County jail.
Williams was beaten in the booking room on Feb. 4, 2006. He died two days later.
In other testimony this morning, former Sheriff's Capt. Rupert Lacy testified that he trained Teel and co-defendant James Ricky "Rick" Gaston in the use of Tasers and Harrison County jailers on the proper use of pepper spray. Lacy said that pepper spray should not be used on an inmate who is restrained, nor should a Taser be used on an inmate who is restrained or complying with orders.
The Sun Herald is in Hattiesburg to cover the trial and gives updates online and in Friday's edition.
