Dateline 1915 — Where’s the fire, chief?

Some days the news is wired for weird. Just think on the following two items and you’ll find them acceptable as the reader did in 1915: n The Biloxi Herald raised a question as to who needs a fire department when “the Gulfport City Council is considering the purchase of a fire-fighting motorcycle for its fire chief; it will be fitted with a small chemical tank and an axe.” n Talking about the price of gold in a time of financial crisis, The Biloxi Herald reported, “Biloxi, Gulfport and Mobile dentists are reporting a rash of gold-filling-tooth burglaries.” It was an authentic red flag indicating that an economic downturn was about to “gum up” the economy.

Sun Herald Memory Bank archives are researched and compiled by retired staff writer Jimmie Bell, whose reporting career at The Daily Herald and The Sun Herald spanned 30 years. Jimmie Bell is editor of Bell’s Letters poetry magazine, published in Gulfport. E-mail, jimbelpoet@aol.com.
