Dateline 1913 — And they hit the road, shovel-ready
The invention of the automobile proved to be one thing; the creation of roadways to accommodate the auto was something else entirely. With no federal funds, no state funds, no city funds — what to do? Without any stimulus remuneration whatsoever, and without even a gasoline tax, a bright new idea was reported by The Biloxi Herald: “Because that new automobile is beginning to proliferate in nearly every town — and especially in Picayune, Miss. — nearly every family has pitched in. (With money? Heavens to Betsy, no!) “All merchants, doctors and lawyers closed their doors for the day and wielded shovels, hoes and rakes in pursuit of roadbeds.”
