To some people, the smell of decaying vegetation and other sea life at the shore this afternoon is somewhat offensive, but to me it is tonic. It brings one a sense of reality. The beach is not always a scene of spectacular sunsets and balmy sea breezes. There is death here too, as the remains of a catfish at water’s edge testifies. Even in death, there is life. The catfish attracts numbers of insects and shorebirds in nature’s remarkable economy. — Diary, autumn 2009
