The sand underfoot this morning at water’s edge appears to be lifeless, inert grains, glistening in the sunlight, but in fact nothing could be further from the truth. It is full of activity, an area of intense endeavor, occupied by literally millions of life forms, some much too small to see. The shorebirds know that there is a multitude of life here, and they continually find tiny crustaceans and other bits of seafood to sustain them. — Diary, autumn 2009
