I hold in my hand a hickory nut that had washed ashore yesterday. Studying the tough, gnarled, weather-beaten shell, one marvels at its remarkable protection of the seed, lying inside, inert and seemingly lifeless. Hickory seeds, I read, remain alive for years within the rugged shell. Burying the shell in a sandy margin by the beach road, I wonder when the shell’s exterior will break apart, freeing the seed to germinate and grow.
