It is usually I who observe shorebirds, but this afternoon the tables are turned. It is I who am scrutinized by a herring gull! The large bird is positioned on the periphery of a gathering of other gulls and a few terns. Its attention is focused solely on me, seated on the seawall a few feet away. What does the gull see? Another trespassing human? A possible predator? On merely a bothersome beach walker who should depart immediately? — Diary, summer 2009
