-- Suspects in a Moss Point murder and an unrelated armed robbery in Long Beach top the latest list of South Mississippi's most wanted criminal suspects.
Five of 12 suspects identified in the Sun Herald list on Nov. 18, 2007, have been taken into custody. One was wanted on a murder charge in Moss Point. Another is a person of interest in a suspicious death under investigation as a homicide in Bay St. Louis.
The updated list identifies 11 suspects, including a man wanted in connection with a recent murder in Moss Point. Police have sought federal agents' help to locate Tony Howard, accused in a shooting Feb. 16 that killed one man and wounded two others at the Touch Of Class nightclub.
Moss Point Detective Sgt. Jeff Smith said investigators also want to hear tips from the public, even if the tip is made anonymously.
Another addition to the list is Willie Lewis Bridges, one of two men suspected of robbing a Long Beach woman at gunpoint on Feb. 8. The woman was held up at her home after making a cash withdrawal from a bank. The other suspect, already arrested, was behind her in line at the bank, said Detective Sgt. Brian Beeman.
At the time, both suspects were on probation for armed robbery convictions.
"We're considering Mr. Bridges armed and dangerous," said Beeman. "His family is aware that we're looking for him."
The public's help is invaluable in solving crimes, but suspects can turn up unexpectedly elsewhere, said Detective Sgt. Joe Kepfer of the Bay St. Louis Police Department.
Case in point is that of Thomas Kukish, wanted for questioning in the suspicious death of Douglas Earl Vick near a swimming pool on Woods Place in July 2007.
Kepfer said surveillance tapes from a Bay St. Louis lounge show Kukish and an acquaintance were with Vick about four hours before Vick's body was found.
"We got a call saying he (Kukish) had been found (in Plainfield, N.J.) stumbling around in the street intoxicated, and the (Plainfield, N.J.) agency noticed he was wanted by our department."
Kepfer said he will travel to New Jersey to question Kukish.
"I'll probably end up bringing him back here," Kepfer said.
South Mississippi's most wanted is an ongoing Sun Herald series compiled using information provided by law enforcement agencies. Participating agencies take into consideration the severity of the crime, public safety concerns and a need for the public's help to develop leads.
