Andrea Diane McKay, 33, was already in custody and accused of causing serious injuries to Vincent Weathersby in a domestic dispute in Gulfport on April 21. Weathersby was taken off life-support this week and authorities upgraded McKay's domestic assault charge to murder.
Weathersby, 38, was cut in the face and neck with a knife. He died of a stab wound to the neck, and his family had gathered at Memorial Hospital before he was removed from life-support equipment Thursday, said Coroner Gary Hargrove.
Weathersby's death is Gulfport's fourth homicide this year.
Weathersby was the father of McKay's child, said Herman Cox, Harrison County prosecuting attorney. Cox asked Justice Court Judge Gene Dedeaux to dismiss the initial charge and to raise McKay's bond from $250,000.
Gulfport police arrested McKay after Weathersby was taken to the hospital the night of April 21. Police said he was assaulted at Hardy Avenue and Old Pass Road.
Court documents show the cuts around Weathersby's neck and face damaged his right carotid artery.
Police at first charged McKay with aggravated domestic violence. Investigators still want to hear from anyone with information about the incident. Tips can be called in to police at (228) 868-5959 or to Mississippi Coast CrimeStoppers, (800) 433-TIPS (8477).
Public records show McKay pleaded guilty to an aggravated assault charge in 1994. She was sentenced to five years with prison time suspended and given three years' probation. Her probation was extended at least twice. One notation shows it was extended in 2000 with a court order to continue attending meetings of Narcotics Anonymous.
