  • Discoveries in your own backyard

Even before I fell under the spell of birding, I was firmly hooked on biological exploration.

  • Ronnie Blackwell: Winter leads to some Arizona dreaming

It’s been a cold and dreary day here in Hattiesburg, complete with thawing ice dribbling from the sky. At least that’s the way it looks from my window. I’m not planning on sticking my head out of the house to confirm the dribbling ice theory, not even for you, dear reader.

  • Ronnie Blackwell: Petite Wrens pack a big punch

Sedge Wrens are special. They readily display a heady mixture of bravado and elusiveness that may be without equal. They are truly tiny birds, just sleek bits of straw-colored fluff and feather. These little birds nest in ephemeral clumps Northern prairie that are always changing. A wet spot that may be bubbling with wren-song one year will be stranded high and dry and silent the next.
