Sea Wolves keep Walby as coach

STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

The Mississippi Sea Wolves are expected to announce a contract extension for head coach/general manager Steffon Walby today, the Sun Herald has learned. The team will hold a 2 p.m. press conference at Beef O'Brady's in D'Iberville to make the announcement.

In his first season, Walby led the Sea Wolves to a playoff appearance despite the team's absence from the ECHL the previous two years because of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Walby holds a record of 29-40-1-2 in the regular season. The Sea Wolves lost their opening-round series to Texas 3-1.

BASEBALL

• UNO 9, Southern Miss 3 - UNO brought one of the NCAA's best offenses into Pete Taylor Park and defeated Southern Miss 9-3 in front of 3,643 fans Tuesday evening, snapping the Golden Eagles' six game winning streak.

"We fell behind early and tried to fight back with a tired pitching staff against a good offense," USM coach Corky Palmer said. "UNO came into this game feeling like they had to win against a good team on the road to help their postseason chances so they threw their number one pitcher against our true freshman creating a little bit of a mismatch for us."

The Privateers finished with 14 hits.

One bright spot on the mound tonight for Southern Miss was Jonathan Johnson, who faced eight hitters allowing only one hit while striking out three.

The Golden Eagles were limited to five hits.
