BILOXI — The Mississippi Surge lost for the first time in the young history of the SPHL franchise.

The Pensacola Ice Flyers scored two third-period goals and skated to a 4-3 victory on Thursday night before an announced Mississippi Coast Coliseum crowd of 1,813.

Lorne Misita and Rob Campbell scored third period goals as the Surge slipped to 2-1 on the season.

Mississippi outshot Pensacola 48-23 for the contest.

“We had the opportunities to score,” Surge coach Steffon Walby said. “We limited their shots. Three goals wasn’t enough.”

Mississippi got off to a slow start, as Pensacola constantly beat the Surge to the puck and grabbed a 2-0 lead.

Chris Healey gave the Ice Flyers a 1-0 lead with a goal less than three minutes into the game.

Two minutes later, the Ice Flyers padded their lead to 2-0 on Chris Rebernik’s goal.

The Surge took advantage of their first power play late in the first period to get back in the game.

Tim Velemirovich’s power-play goal brought the Surge to within 2-1.

The Surge’s energy live picked up as they outscout Pensacola 16-8 in the first period.

Ninety seconds into the second period, the Surge tied the game at 2 on Matt Zultek’s goal. Mississippi outshot Pensacola 17-9 in that period.

In the third period, Pensacola (2-0) outscored the Surge 2-1.

The Ice Flyers regained the lead at 3-2 on Misita’s goal with nine minutes left. Campbell’s goal with 5:21 left put the Ice Flyers in control.
