BILOXI -- The Mississippi Surge announced today the signing for forward Mark Black for the 2009-10 season.

A native of Edmonton, Alta., Black appeared in eight games during 2008-09 for Twin City of the Southern Professional Hockey League, earning 45 minutes in penalties, including a season-high 12 against Columbus in his SPHL debut on October 31, 2008.

“Mark Black is going to give the Surge a tremendous physical presence up front,” said Coach Steffon Walby. “We’re expecting him to be an up-tempo, high-energy player who will use his physical size to our advantage.”

During the previous season, Black also appeared in five games for Ste. Marie Poutrelles Delta of the Ligue Nord Americaine de Hockey, earning 41 penalty minutes.

In 48 career games in the LNAH with Trois-Rivieres, Sherbrooke, and Ste. Marie, the 6-5, 265-pound Black has accrued 295 penalty minutes during his career in the Quebec-based professional loop.
