The game couldn't get any bigger.
A trip to Jackson is on the line for the undefeated D'Iberville Warriors, who are in quest of their second state football championship.
The last time the Warriors were in this position - when they played George County in 2002 for the South State 4A title - fans were provided with a game that will never be forgotten. D'Iberville rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat the Rebels on a Nick Ladner touchdown pass.
As it turned out, the South State title game was tougher than the overall state championship victory past West Point.
Adding to the importance of tonight's game is that the Warriors face a Mustang football team that knocked them out of the state playoffs a year ago at Soso.
The Warriors, already the highest scoring team in school history, added to their total with their victory over Northeast Jones. They are still scoring over 41 points a game, an astonishing number.
D'Iberville coach Buddy Singleton, who has had a couple of undefeated teams before the reinstallation of the state playoffs, is also looking for his second trip to Jackson for a state championship game. He took St. John to the 2A state championship game against Ackerman.
No doubt, this will be a tough challenge. West Jones can play some defense. Even though they were the No. 4 seed from their region, they shut out Division 7 champion Gautier in the state playoff opener. Last week they accomplished what no one expected - a 10-7 upset of 4A powerhouse Wayne County.
D'Iberville has a lot of weapons on offense: quarterback Jake Miller, tailback Mark Seymour, wide receiver Kevin Norwood and multi-purpose threat Jacoby Bell. And the defense has played well, clamping down when necessary.
Doug's Picks will be surprised if this game gets into the 30-point range. Of course, we said that last week.
But we do expect more of a defensive game.
With that in mind, get ready for a trip to Jackson. D'Iberville 21, West Jones 17.
