One week after a tumultuous Friday, the state football playoffs begin in Classes 4A, 3A and 2A.

And there are still playoff matters to be decided in Class 5A during the final week of the regular season.

Can D'Iberville continue its unbeaten streak tonight against Mendenhall, and continue its drive for a second state championship?

Will Gautier continue its magical second half of the season?

Who will take second place in Region 4-5A: Ocean Springs or George County?

And can Harrison Central close the deal and make the state playoffs?

Doug's Picks is coming off a 9-3 week. That lifts our season record to 98-27, for a .784 winning percentage.

Goldfinger had a little smile on his face when Long Beach upset Bay High - one of our three misses last week along with Stone and East Central.

And on with the picks.

Biloxi at Gulfport - The last two games in this old rivalry have not been decided until the last few seconds. Gulfport still has a shot at the state playoffs if the dominoes fall right. But the Admirals have to win this game to have a chance. Biloxi has not won two in a row over Gulfport in more than 20 years and has not won in Milner Stadium in two decades. We'll go with home-field advantage. Gulfport 21, Biloxi 20.

George County at Ocean Springs - A duel of two excellent running attacks, and two good defenses as well. Both of these teams have the players and temperament to make a run at Jackson, and the winner of this game opens the state playoffs at home. Again, we like the home field. Ocean Springs 28, George County 24.

Harrison Central at Hancock - The Red Rebels were in trouble three weeks ago, but back-to-back wins over Biloxi and Pascagoula give HCHS in the inside track at the No. 4 seed from Region 4-5A for the state playoffs. Look for the Red Rebs to close the deal but not without a struggle. Harrison Central 21, Hancock 14.

Pascagoula at Petal - Since a super first quarter at George County three weeks ago, Pascagoula has struggled. We think Petal finishes its region run unbeaten. Petal 21, Pascagoula 7.

Mendenhall at D'Iberville - The Warriors are coming off an emotional victory over Picayune that wrapped up the Region 8-4A title. Now they begin the quest for a 4A state title. We don't look for any letdown tonight from Mark Seymour, Jake Miller, Kevin Norwood and company. D'Iberville 31, Mendenhall 17.

West Jones at Gautier - The Mustangs bring their aerial attack to Pascagoula against a Gator team that has turned it on in the second half of the season. We look for a high-scoring playoff opener. Gautier 31, West Jones 28.
