Freshman pitches Rebs past LSU 7-1

Tigers are held to just four hits

Ole Miss freshman Drew Pomeranz limited LSU to four hits in eight innings as the Rebels defeated the Tigers 7-1 on Saturday.

Pomeranz (3-1) worked eight innings for the win, allowing one run with three walks and five strikeouts.

The Rebels took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against LSU starter Blake Martin as DH Fuller Smith doubled and scored on leftfielder Logan Power's triple to right field.

Ole Miss (24-11, 9-5) extended its advantage to 3-0 in the second inning as the Rebels scored on catcher Brett Basham's suicide squeeze bunt with the bases loaded before Smith delivered an RBI single.

The Rebels struck for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Second baseman Zach Miller lined an RBI double, Power contributed a two-run single and third baseman Cody Overbeck added an RBI single to highlight the inning.

LSU (21-13, 5-9) scored its run in the top of the eighth when catcher Micah Gibbs doubled and later scored on third baseman Michael Hollander's grounder to shortstop.

USM 8, Arkansas State 7 - Southern Miss scored four runs in the ninth inning to come from behind and defeat Arkansas State 8-7 on Saturday

Chris Matesich had a two-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory for Southern Miss. He was 4-for-5 with a home run, double and six RBIs.

Southern Miss had 12 hits in the game but none bigger than the single to right field by Matesich that scored pinch runner Adam Doleac and Drew Carson. Matesich's single was the only hit in the ninth inning as ASU closer Cory Lambert walked four batters and hit Carson with a pitch to keep Southern Miss in the game.

Vanderbilt 16, MSU 0 - Pedro Alvarez had four hits and drove in four runs as Vanderbilt shut out Mississippi State 16-0 Saturday.

The Commodores (23-10, 7-6 Southeastern Conference) have outscored the Bulldogs (14-20, 3-11) 28-1 since falling behind 7-3 in the fourth inning of Friday night's 15-8 win.

The Commodores had 15 hits, increasing their series total to 33. Alvarez's three-run home run in the third inning broke open the game and Vanderbilt also received multiple hits from David Macias, Alex Feinberg, Ryan Flaherty, Andrew Giobbi and Brian Harris.

Caleb Cotham (5-2) struck out seven and allowed five hits in seven innings for the win.

New Orleans 5, Western Kentucky 3 - New Orleans defeated Western Kentucky 5-3 on Saturday in Sun Belt Conference action.

Brian Cryer (7-1) limited the Hilltoppers to three hits and one run in seven innings of work. UNO (22-10, 7-6) clinched its third straight conference weekend series with the win.

On Friday, the Privateers won 11-10. Pascagoula's Joey Butler hit a three-run home run and had a career-high six RBIs for UNO. He was hitless in four at-bats on Saturday.

South Carolina 8, Auburn 6 - Phil Disher's home run in the eighth led South Carolina to an 8-6 win over Auburn on Saturday.

Disher homered off of eventual loser Taylor Thompson (2-3) with a runner on and two outs.

Georgia 13, Kentucky 4 - Bryce Massanari had three RBIs and Rich Poythress drove in two runs to lead Georgia to a 13-4 win over Kentucky on Saturday.

Alabama 11, Tennessee 10 - Jake Smith knocked in three runs to lead Alabama to an 11-10 victory over Tennessee in the first game of a double-header on Saturday.
