USM pitchers shut out Herd to take series

STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

Three Southern Miss pitchers combined to shut out Marshall for the first time this season in a 5-0 victory to take the weekend series on the road.

After the two teams combined for 46 runs and 58 hits in the first two games of the series, Sunday's game featured only 14 hits and five runs. Eight of the hits and all five runs belonged to Southern Miss.

The best news of the day was the return of staff ace Barry Bowden, who looked terrific in his first outing since April 5.

Jonathan Johnston was outstanding in relief of Bowden, working 32/3 innings and tied the longest outing of his career, allowing only three hits without giving up a run. Wade Weathers finished the game.

James Ewing led the charge offensively again for Southern Miss with two hits, two runs and two RBI. His two hits were a triple and a double on the afternoon. Over the three-game series at Marshall, Ewing hit an even .500 (7/14) with five extra base hits, six runs scored and eight RBIs.

Southern Miss scored the game's first run in the top of the third as Ewing continued his hot hitting with a double to right-center field, scoring Brian Dozier from first for an early 1-0 lead. Corey Stevens delivered with a two-out single up the middle to score Ewing from third base.

LSU 9, Kentucky 8 - Matt Clark hit a two-run home run with two outs in the ninth as LSU beat Kentucky on Sunday 9-8 to sweep the three-game series.

LSU (32-16-1, 12-11-1 Southeastern Conference) took the first home series sweep against the Wildcats since 2004, when they fell to Florida.

Kentucky (34-14, 11-13 SEC) led 8-3 heading into the sixth inning, but was outscored 6-0 over the final four.

Kentucky reliever Andrew Albers surrendered Clarks' homer and took the loss. Winning pitcher Daniel Bradshaw threw 31/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit.

Auburn 12, MSU 2 - Mississippi State had a tough afternoon on the baseball diamond, falling to Auburn in the final game of a Southeastern Conference baseball series.

Auburn broke open a tight game with three runs in the seventh inning and four more scores in the eighth inning. The Tigers pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of three MSU errors to take the weekend series, two games to one. With the victory, Auburn improved to 26-23 overall and 10-14 in conference play, while MSU fell to 19-28 and 7-17.

Georgia 11, Ole Miss 4 - The Rebels scored first on Sunday, but the Bulldogs answered with a barrage of home runs as No. 25 Ole Miss (31-19, 12-12 SEC) fell 11-4 to No. 8 Georgia on Sunday in the rubber match of the weekend series.

Tim Ferguson and Cody Overbeck both hit home runs for the Rebels to pace the Ole Miss offense.

Cody Satterwhite (3-5) suffered the loss as he allowed six runs - four earned - on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Three of the seven hits were home runs.

Nathan Moreau (2-2) picked up the win for the Bulldogs as he held the Rebels to two runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts in six innings of work.

UCF 12, Tulane 1 - The Tulane University baseball team dropped the third game of its Conference USA series against UCF by a 12-1 score in seven innings Sunday afternoon at the new Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

With the loss, Tulane falls to 32-14-1 on the year and 10-6-1 in C-USA play, while UCF improves to 28-21 and 6-15 in C-USA play.
