GULFPORT — The Coast had no developments in the final round of Go Zone housing tax credits recently awarded by the state, according to the Mississippi Home Corp.
The Go Zone program to spur redevelopment of housing after Hurricane Katrina ended with the latest round, said Scott Spivey of the Mississippi Home Corp., which administers the program.
Gulfport Mayor George Schloegel recently notified Gov. Haley Barbour that the city has all the tax-credit housing it needs to recover from Katrina. Under the program, developers are awarded tax credits that can be sold to investors as a way to finance subdivisions and apartments. Schloegel told a Gulfport Chamber of Commerce crowd the governor called last week to say the program would end.
Spivey said the Go Zone credits were set to expire, anyway, with the last round of credits awarded for 2009. He said the state’s regular tax-credit program will continue, with credit awards based on market need and other factors.
