Open records rules can be as easy as filling in the blanks

Way back in 1982, the Legislature consolidated various hints, suspicions and beliefs about access to government documents by adopting the Mississippi Public Records Act.

In this case, time will hurt rather than heal

As a doctor for medically underserved children, I see the effects of our broken health care system every day. The majority of children that I see at the community health center where I work are either uninsured or are underinsured even though the many of them have at least one working parent. The economy has impacted the kind of work the parents of my patients are now doing, and how much work they are offered. In many cases the status is part-time which does not allow for full benefits if any at all. When a parent loses or isn’t offered health insurance, many children go without check-ups and necessary medical care.

March 18 SCENES FROM THE BEACH

At the end of a beach walk, the west wind at my back, I approach a large gathering of shorebirds — gulls and skimmers mostly, but also some terns. The birds stand on the damp sand of the flats, the tide still at ebb. Facing into the wind, each bird’s eyes peer at my intrusion. As I near the roost, the gulls walk away slowly, distancing themselves from me, but all the skimmers, barking their raspy complaints at me, fly away in full retreat. — Diary, winter 2010
