— The South Pike School District is considering a proposal to allow a private company to handle food services.

The Enterprise-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/W6RGRB ) the school board will consider the proposal from Sodexo on July 28. Sodexo is a multinational service company with U.S. headquarters in Maryland. It operates many school cafeterias.

According to school district records, South Pike schools served 175,803 breakfasts and 283,285 lunches during the 2013-14 school year. District records show the food cost per meal was $1.14.

Mike Aguilera of Sodexo told the school board in an earlier meeting the company could help the district reduce food costs and increase student participation in both breakfast and lunch.

Aguilera says Sodexo's food costs for districts about the same size as South Pike $1.05 per meal and could be lower.
