MDOT closes highway after truck hits bridge

The Associated PressJuly 14, 2014

— Mississippi Department of Transportation work crews are attempting to remove a wedged tractor from an overpass after a semitrailer accident on U.S. Highway 49 in Hattiesburg.

WDAM-TV in Laurel reports a semitrailer toting a tractor was driving on Highway 49 Monday when it hit the Interstate 59 overpass in Hattiesburg near Exit 67. The tractor struck the overpass and became wedged.

MDOT is getting assistance from bridge structural specialists in Jackson on how to remove the tractor from the bridge safely.

Both southbound lanes of Highway 49 are closed, and traffic is backed up for about a mile and a half.

The overpass on I-59 is closed, and motorists are encouraged to take the Evelyn Gandy exit when traveling north toward Hattiesburg.
