Fire chief achieves top ranking

GULFPORT -- Fire Chief Mike Beyerstedt has been certified as an executive fire officer by the National Fire Academy, a distinction achieved by only a few people in Mississippi.

It is the highest level of achievement in the American fire service. To qualify, Beyerstedt completed a four-year program of college-equivalent courses and research projects. The program emphasizes a proactive approach to emergency services, applied research, lifelong learning and diversity.

"It's something I'm excited about," said Beyerstedt, whose achievement Mayor Billy Hewes recently recognized at a City Council meeting. "It's been a lot of hard work over four years."
