Two Gulfport food establishments have critical health violations

Two South Mississippi service establishments were among nine in the state cited this week by the Mississippi State Department of Health for critical violations.

Given C ratings following scheduled inspections Monday were Food Giant Supermarket at 12057 U.S. 49 in Gulfport and Special Event Concession Services, 17200 16th St., Gulfport. The report shows Food Giant was found not in compliance for maintaining proper hot holding temperatures, for improper date marking and disposition and for having insects, rodents or animals present. This was the 10th time since July 2009 the fast food/deli department was given a C rating.

Special Event Concession Services was found to have insects, rodents or animals present. This was the first violation since the permit was granted in February 2013.

The Health Department gives all food facilities A, B or C grades after they're inspected. An A grade means there were no violations. An establishment gets a B rating if violations are found but corrected during the inspection.

A rating of C indicates critical violations were found and all were not corrected during the inspection. The facility will be reinspected, and all violations must be corrected within 10 days. A C also is given if critical violations are repeated from the last inspection, even if they are corrected at that time.

The rating system is used for all food facilities in the state, including school cafeterias and day-care centers.

If violations are not corrected, the Health Department can suspend the facility's permit to operate.
