MSU's Johnson, Ole Miss' Engram on John Mackey watch list

Mississippi State senior Malcolm Johnson and Ole Miss sophomore Evan Engram have been named to the watch list for the John Mackey Award, which is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end.

Mississippi State's Dillon Day and LSU's Elliott Porter were named to the watch list for the Rimington Trophy, presented annually to college football's most outstanding center.

Johnson, a 2013 second team All-Southeastern Conference selection by the league's coaches, enters his final campaign with 32 career games played and 11 starts.

He has totaled 51 receptions for 768 yards and seven touchdowns during his three years with the Bulldogs. He is from Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Engram, from Powder Springs, Ga., burst onto the scene last year with an Ole Miss freshman tight end record three touchdown catches on the way to All-SEC second team honors.

He caught 21 passes for 268 yards despite missing five games with a high ankle sprain.

Day, a native of West Monroe, La., enters his senior campaign having started 33 career games.

In 2013, Day paved the way for a Bulldog offense that shattered school marks in total yards (5,674), yards per game (434.4) and first downs (305)

A native of Waggaman, La., Porter started 12 games last season at center and helped anchor an LSU offensive line that paved the way for a single-season school record with 37 rushing touchdowns.

Houston Named NECBL Pitcher of the Week: Rising Mississippi State sophomore right-handed pitcher Zac Houston was named New England Collegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Week as a member of the Plymouth Pilgrims, the league announced Monday.

Houston finished the week with five hitless innings in three relief appearances.

The right-hander struck out a league-best 10 batters.

The Poplarville native owns a 2.57 ERA and a .118 opponent batting average this summer.

Due in large part to Houston's efforts on the mound and his college teammate Brent Rooker's performance at the plate, the Pilgrims own a league-best 18-5 record with less than a month to play in the regular season.

USM's Barron, USM signee Walker make All-Star game: Southern Miss senior outfielder Connor Barron and Golden Eagles signee Taylor Walker, both members of the Acadiana Cane Cutters this summer, are participating in the Texas Collegiate League All-Star game.

The contest takes place at Cellucor Field in Bryan, Texas -- the home of the Brazos Valley Bombers.
