GULFPORT -- No one was injured in a fire Sunday morning that heavily damaged a home and killed several pets, Battalion Chief Chris Henderson said.

Sixteen firefighters responded to a fire in the 14000 block of East Side Avenue at 10:37 a.m. with flames showing from the single-story wood-frame house. Henderson said it took firefighters about 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control. Although the residents were outside when firefighters arrived and were uninjured, Henderson said two dogs and four birds were killed by smoke.

Henderson said an investigator determined tan electrical malfunction started the fire. He said the home sustained extensive fire and smoke damage. The Red Cross responded to help the residents.
