STONE COUNTY -- A single-car accident in McHenry on Saturday night left a mother dead and her son injured.

Coroner Wayne Flurry said Mylinda Beech, 45, of Gulfport, was the passenger in a 1997 Volkswagen Jetta driven by her son Brandon Beech, 22, north on Old Highway 49 about 7:30 p.m.

Stone County Chief Deputy Phyllis Olds said Brandon Beech lost control of the vehicle on a sharp turn near Riceville Road, ran off the road and struck a tree on the passenger's side.

Mylinda Beech was wearing her seat belt but died at the scene as a result of blunt force trauma, Flurry said.

Brandon Beech was taken by ambulance to Wiggins and then air lifted to Forrest General in Hattiesburg, where he was treated for minor-to-moderate injuries, Flurry said.

Olds said speed is believed to have been a factor in the accident.

The Stone County Sheriff's Office said the investigation is ongoing.
