MARY SPALDING: Mallards ate anything that crawled

July 5, 2014

Thank you, Gale Laird, for the giggle this morning ("Turtles rule gardens in Pass Christian"), but I doubt monkeys are native to the area.

However, I have found that a supply of food will tame just about any critter, male or female. All I had to do was bang on a tin pie pan and the lizards came running for their bugs. My pet raven loved cherries and dog food. And my tortoise loved strawberries.

The most fun I had was with my mallards, who ate anything that crawled. I never had to worry about black widow spiders or mice.
