Of the three oldest records at the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, one is listed as a state record -- the 62-pound sailfish caught by Eddie Jones of Biloxi in 1963.
The oldest MDSFR record is the 23-pound bonita caught by C.J. Saucier of Biloxi in 1950. The current state record from the Mississippi Dept. of Marine Resources is listed under Little Tunny (Bonito) and was 29 pounds, 8.8 ounces caught by Jean A. Thornton in 1994.
Billy Barnett of Gulfport holds the MDSFR freshwater catfish record of 81 pounds, 12 ounces, caught in 1966.
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks keeps the state freshwater records. In the freshwater sport fish trophy records, Toby Lawrence of Oxford caught an 81-pound, 2-ounce flathead catfish and Freddie Parker and Brad Smith of Bogue Chitto caught a 101-pound blue catfish. In the regular category of rod and reel, Dakota Hinson of Natchez caught a 95-pound blue catfish and Matt Bingham of Memphis caught a 77.7-pound blue catfish.
