FRANK ROBLES: American 'football' is not 'handball'

July 1, 2014

Re: "American 'football' is really 'handball' " in the Friday Letters to the Editor section.

I agree with Mr. Creel that soccer is not football, but never should it be called handball.

The game of handball has been played since the 19th century or earlier. Players use a small, lively bouncing rubber ball. The ball can only be stroked (hit) with the hands, left or right, no foot kicks, no running, passing, catching or diving with the ball.

I played handball regularly at the New Orleans Athletic Club for more than 30 years with the same group of guys until I retired and moved to beautiful Diamondhead.

I say again, football is not handball.
