Kress Live, Level One opening with bangs

BILOXI -- The final push is on in earnest at Kress Live, a regional music and entertainment venue set to open Thursday for a VIP party and Friday to the public.

Downtown Vieux Marche will be rocking for the Fourth. A second nightclub, Level One, plans to open with a VIP party Wednesday and hold its grand opening for the public Thursday.

The city is working with both venues to inspect and approve final touches so they make their openings, Community Development Director Jerry Creel said.

"It's going to be amazing," said David Devaney, Kress sound engineer and stage manager. "Think House of Blues (New Orleans), but bigger and better, and in Biloxi.

"This is the coolest thing to happen in Biloxi in a long, long time."

Longtime friends Chase Taylor and Nick Quave dreamed up the venue a few years ago. They wanted to honor their heritage, especially the extraordinary music created by Mississippians such as Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Jimmie Rodgers and Robert Johnson, to name a few.

The turn-of-the-century Kress building downtown seemed a perfect location.

It was hard to walk around in the three-story building Monday without disrupting a painter or construction worker. Plenty of finishing touches remain.

On Friday night, the crowd will be treated to LED fireworks, hip-hop tunes from P.M. Dawn and disc jockey Hyphee. Several groups are on the lineup for Saturday.

In fact, Kress hopes to feature 120 live acts each year.

Quave said they want to reinject the culture into the community. "Once this opens, downtown will come back to life."
