Surrender of Vicksburg highlights July 4th weekend

VICKSBURG -- The Vicksburg National Military Park will host a two-day commemoration of the 151st Anniversary of the surrender of Vicksburg.

Events are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the military park. The program marks Confederate Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's surrender to Union Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant on July 4, 1863.

The park cannon detachment will be providing interpretive demonstrations and firing hourly from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Tour Stop 1 on Friday and Saturday. They will be joined by the volunteers of McGuffie's Battery on Friday.

The Shirley House will be open on Saturday and Sunday. It was the only military park-related building left standing after the battle.
