Fishing, fireworks, concerts and fun light up week of holiday

South Mississippi has plenty of snap, crackle and pop lined up to celebrate Independence Day this week.

Starting on Wednesday, the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs will hold a Red, White and Walter celebration featuring craft beer selections paired with cigars. The event will include a cookout and live music for a cost of $25 for potential members, $15 for members and free to new members. Details: 872-3164.

On Thursday, the 66th annual Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo opens its four-day run at Jones Park, off U.S. 90, in Gulfport. Spectators will be treated to a spectacular display of fish, and the event includes midway rides, entertainment and more. Admission is $5 per day, and free to ages 5 and under. A $10 armband, available Thursday only, is good for admission to all four days. Details: 863-2713.

On Friday, the 30th annual Our Lady of the Gulf Crab Festival in Bay St. Louis opens its three days of festivities, which include food, live music, arts and crafts booths, rides and more. The event will be held at the Our Lady of the Gulf church grounds, 228 South Beach. Details: 467-6509.

Also on Friday, the Flag Run, a convoy of antique military vehicles, will make its annual trek along U.S. 90 Friday to carry the American flag across the Coast. Mississippi Coast Watchers leave at 10:30 a.m. from Bay St. Louis, go U.S. 90 through Gulfport, Biloxi, Ocean Springs and end at the G.I. Museum off Mississippi 57, 5796 Ritcher Road in Gautier.

Fourth of July celebrations and concerts will be held in several locales, from Kiln to Pascagoula. Among their fireworks shows:

Necaise Crossing Ballpark, Hancock County: Event opens at 7 p.m. and will include fireworks.

Ocean Springs: 8:40 p.m., Fort Maurepas Park

Gulfport: 8:45 p.m., Gulfport Harbor

Biloxi: 9 p.m., Biloxi Small Craft Harbor

Pascagoula: 9 p.m., Beach Park

In Kiln: The first Spark in the Park event, at Muddy Joe's Off Road and RV Park, will also feature fireworks. On Saturday, a Tracy Lawrence concert will begin at 8 p.m. to round out the weekend. Details: 255-7600.
