BILOXI -- Police have arrested a couple accused of exploiting a vulnerable adult by taking the man's prescription drugs and other property, Biloxi police Lt. Aldon Helmert said.

Police arrested Biloxi residents Robert Earl Brewer, 45, and Sherry Suzanne Bartel, 53, late Tuesday night.

Helmert said the couple are caregivers for an older adult. Police have received complaints that they were taking the man's prescriptions and selling the pills, and taking his money and other property, he said.

Brewer and Bartel were held at the Harrison County jail.

Justice Court Judge Bruce Strong set bond for each at $100,000.

"Our job is to try to stem the tide in the flow of narcotics," said Helmert, who leads a special crimes unit.

"My job comes down to protecting those who cannot protect themselves," he said. "This time it wasn't our normal drug arrest."
